Book 1: Glow
Excerpt: Chapter One
The stench in the room reminded me of alley urine mixed with the festering rot of two-day-old maggot-ridden Chow Mein Noodles. The reek strewn together with the essence of crushed beer cans still lingering with bum backwash, the green haze of crap-filled diapers and the rest of life’s inhumanity all left to bake in a noonday sun.
Pretty as that picture rendered, the sunken, hollow figure that lay strapped to the bed before me—sequestered like a roped steer heading off to slaughter, skin three shades of soot or four-day-old death—didn’t soothe my conscience none. Neither did the job ahead. A job that wasn’t always pretty, or soothed the fragile fears, but I kept praying that the poor, beleaguered soul that lay thrashing and chanting some forgotten language in the bed before me might someday thank me when we met on the other side.
At least that’s what I told myself every time I got this kind of call. That the fight for the downtrodden and forgotten was for something. That I wasn’t just another pawn in the game of the Lords. That God’s master plan would someday see me through and to Hell, literally, with the Devil.
My name is Faith Savage, and I hunt demons. It’s a task I’ve been given. Recruited into, so to speak. The details at this point are of little matter. No, what matters is getting this poor soul free of her demon and dragging it back to the Netherworld. It’s a dirty job, I know, but somebody has to do it. And today, that somebody is me.
